Sushi!

 Week 1 of being 18
My first week as a legal adult. [My mom says that you're not really an adult until you can provide for yourself. She kind of has a point.] The glorious day of my birth began with fog so thick I could barely see the other side of the high way on my way to school. It ended with gifts from my family, including my wondrous new Nook! I still haven't really used it yet, though, because I have some books that I bought a while back that I need to read. I finished The Once and Future King, over a month after I started it, and I'm not going to review it. Honestly, I don't have enough words to do it any justice. You should definitely read it, though. My WYSE team advanced to sectionals [yeah!]. Unfortunately, I didn't place in my subjects, English and math, but I don't really mind as much as I thought I would. My friends took me out to a sushi and steakhouse. It was delicoussssss! I hadn't eaten there since prom last year, and I had forgotten just how delicious it is. They [sort of] surprised me with cheesecake. And we ended the night by eating Blizzards from Dairy Queen and watching re-runs of Hey Arnold!

The only downside to this week is the illness I'm now fighting with Advil, Luden's Cough Drops, and cold medicine. I don't think I've ever had a birthday without getting sick at some point. But overall, a great start to my 19th year. And thanks to Lex, Anna, and Hazel for wishing me a happy birthday!

You guys....

IT'S MAH BIRFDAY!!!!!!!!!

I am now a legal adult. In the sense that I'm eighteen years old. My mom says that I'm not really an adult until I can support myself. Poop.
But it doesn't matter anyway....

Because...

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm also the proud owner of a helicopter now. Birthdays are great.

Where's the laugh track?

Friday night I attended an overnight thingy at the college I'll be attending next fall. Well, it was actually an overnight for next semester's freshmen who are applying for the honors program. The person I was *supposed* to be staying with was rushing a sorority that night and never showed up. I would have been panicked, but I got to hang out with a couple of my brother's friends. When it was time to go back to the dorms for the night the RA found me a room to stay in.

I go in there, meet one of the roommates and another girl staying there, and everything seems good. They're both nice. We're about to watch The Hangover. The roommate mentions that her roommate is a bit crazy and tells how she fell off the top bunk last night. The girl walks in with one of her friends and I know her. I know her. Great. Because I know her and know what she's like. And I don't like her. She chats for a couple minutes, leaves, and comes back with a group of guys who are also there for the overnight.

The start talking about how they skipped one of the "lame" presentations [how could they know if it's lame if they didn't go to it, stupid] to watch the TKEs get initiated. Now, I have nothing against fraternities or sororities. I have friends and family members who I adore greatly that are/have been in one.In fact, I might join one when I go to college. Who knows. But there's always that fraternity and that sorority which is like how they are portrayed in the movies. So they start talking about how "effing awesome" it was. And every time one of them says TKE [pronounced teek] they start chanting, "TEEK TEEK TEEK TEEK TEEK" over and over and over again. At this point I'm thinking, "Is this really my life? Am I in a sit com?" And complain how they can't go to the party.

This whole time the girl that I don't like is flirting with them, tossing her hair around, standing with her butt sticking out -- the usual. One of the boys mentions that they want to be on the football team. She says, "Well I'm on the dance squad so I'll be sitting right behind you, cheering!" *cue hair tossing and waving of the pom poms conveniently placed on the window sill*

This went on for about ten minutes before the RA, who happens to be one of my friends, saved me. In the end, I stayed in a room with two different girls. I felt bad for the other girl, she seemed really nice, but damn. Her roommate is something else. I mean, I felt like I was in Sydney White or something. I didn't want to be a prude or anything, I have been to parties and been around people like that. But I was not going to be subjected to the ridiculousness of the whole situation for the next nine hours.

Double Whammy!

I finally got my snow! It didn't actually snow much at all, just a thin blanket. But that's all right with me, any snow will do. So now I get to wear my snow boots for a legit reason and no one can call me out on it. So there.

And my copy of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green came in the mail today! I haven't read it yet so I can't really tell you about it. But this author, John Green, said that he would sign every pre-order and first printing of the book. I think there were something like 180,000 or possibly 200,000 copies. Super intense. No one can ever say that he doesn't love his readers. His brother Hank drew "Hanklerfish" on some of the copies and his wife the "Yeti" drew Yetis on some other copies. Sadly, I got neither. But I'm happy that I got a signed copy!

Also I'm considering getting a Kindle or a Nook. Any suggestions on which is better? I'm finding out that Kindles break more often, but any input you have to offer is greatly appreciated. Happy Friday the 13th!

December Favorites

To be honest, I'm not even trying to get this done before the month ends. I give myself a week after.

BAND: Fall Out Boy Let me be straight with you. Middle school and freshmen year I was a bit of a scenie weanie before the "scene" thing kind of took off. I was absolutely OBSESSED with Fall Out Boy. I think I've mentioned it before, but I am a proud owner of all the albums that Fall Out Boy ever put out. Including the obscure acoustic album and the album that they didn't even promote. I know all the words to pretty much every song. Except for the non-promoted album and the last album [the last album was complete crap, sorry boys]. This month it's been more of a nostalgia thing. I still think they're pretty good. I mean, Patrick Stump's voice is amazing. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them. But if you want to, it won't be a waste of time.

SONG: "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" Come on people, it's Christmas! But I want to be specific about this one. My favorite recording is by Hilary Duff on her Santa Claus Lane album. From 2002. Classic Hilary Duff. And I don't really give a crap that her voice was auto-tuned the crap out of. It's Hilary Duff. I just love her so much.

BOOK: The Hunger Games If you don't know about The Hunger Games I don't even know what to think. I reread it because my friend Kayla was reading them for the first time and I was a little jealous. It's just so good! I'll give you a little bit of background, although I think pretty much all of you probably know about it already. It's set in what used to be a part of America, after a huge war. There's twelve districts all being controlled by the Capitol. Every year they host the Hunger Games where two tributes, one boy and one girl, from each tribute have to fight, or just survive, to the death until only one remains. I guess this way the Capitol can remind everyone how big of jerks they are and the power that they have. The book follows Katniss Everdeen and her experience with the Hunger Games. It's the first in a trilogy and I'm begging you to read it if you haven't already. There's even a movie coming out in March, I think!

BLOGGER: the lexical gap. Lex is probably my all-time favorite blogger. She's funny, witty, and tells it like it is. She has this whole series going on why she hates Twilight. I mean, that alone is reason enough. Seriously, though, her blog is so fun to read. She's really upfront about the way she feels about a certain topic/person/thing/etc. and actually gives rational thought out reasons [unlike a lot of people who think they make sense but just sound ridiculous]. If you don't follow her blog you're missing out.

YOUTUBER: wehavegirlfriends The funniest thing of my life. Three guys, Kevin, Mitchell, and Kyle, tell short stories from their lives. Most of them are about things that happened while they were in high school. Stories like parties, run-ins with cops, and girl issues. It may sound kind of overrated, but these stories are so freaking hilarious and not what you would expect. I laughed so hard I almost peed myself. It's actually more like a podcast with very crudely-drawn illustrations. As in, stick figures. Do me a favor and just watch one. That's all I ask. You will thank me for this.

TV SHOW: Sons of Anarchy I actually didn't watch any particular TV show series this month. All the shows that I normally follow had finished their seasons. My family did get Netflix this month, however, so I decided to watch Sons of Anarchy from the beginning. It's an FX series about a motorcycle gang club.Yes, a motorcycle gang. They live in southern California and run a car repair shop. While secretly running guns and eventually drugs.Listen I know it sounds weird that I like this show, but I can't stop watching it. Plus the main character is hot. In a different way. Watch it, don't watch it, but I'm obesessed.

VIDEO GAME: Super Mario Bros. Wii I bought this game with some Christmas money and it is awesome! It's kind of like a combination of the old school Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros., with a completely different twist. It has a 4-player option and has a cool feature that I refer to as "bubbling." If you're about to die you can press A causing you to be caught in a bubble. Your teammate can then release you from the bubble. There's also some sweet new power-ups [propeller hat anyone? perhaps a penguin suit?! just to name a few] and some new moves. You can never go wrong with Mario.

THING: Snow boots! I bought these boots on sale in November in anticipation of snow. It's now January and snow has yet to be seen here. In fact, it was freaking 50 degrees this week! What the heck?! I am a cold weather person and the weather has been killing me. Especially because I got these freaking amazing new boots! Not that the lack of snow has stopped me. I wear them all the time. And I will continue to until springtime. So just try and give me crap, I don't care.

And now I need to go catch up on my blogs. Happy New Year!

EXPLOSION

I've been a bad, bad blogger. It's been a week maybe that I haven't even logged into Blogger? I'm not sure. I could check but Christmas break has made me lazy. I had excellent, amazing things planned for this post. They were going to blow your mind. Fireworks! Explosions! Leonardo DiCaprio! I promise you, it was going to be something for the record books. However, I instead decided that it wouldn't be so nice to blow your mind and render it useless so close to Christmas. For your reading pleasure: a questionnaire stolen from Kathy.

1. What time did you get up this morning?
I sort of woke up at 9:30 am. But I fell asleep and woke up off and on until 11 am when I decided to grace the world with my presence. Hey, give me a break, I don't have to go back to school for two weeks.

2. How do you like your steak?
Are you offering? Medium.

3. What was the last movie you saw at the theater?
I went to see Immortals with my friends Kayla and Morgan. As I said before, it was all right. Not the greatest. The guys were hot, though. So that's always a plus!

4. What is your favorite TV show?
At the moment I am in love with New Girl. Zooey Deschanel is the greatest. I'm also obsessed with Sons of Anarchy. Because who doesn't love TV shows about motorcycle gangs?

5. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Pffffffffff. I don't even know at this point. I would love to live anywhere in Europe. But not permanently. I imagine I will end up settling somewhere in Illinois or Missouri because I'm too close with my family to be able to move away from them forever.

6. What did you have for breakfast?
I woke up too late for breakfast. I had mac 'n' cheese for lunch, though.

7. Do you wear glasses or contacts?
Contacts, for sure. I absolutely hate wearing my glasses. They just feel too inhibiting.

8. What food do you despise?
I am always willing to try anything once. But I cannot stand tuna. Just the smell of it makes me feel sick.

9. Favorite Place to Eat?
Guadalajara. [Not the place in Mexico, the Mexican restaurant literally two minutes away from my house.]

10. Favorite dressing?
I can't stand dressing. But the pizza place Monical's has their own special French dressing that is divine with pizza. Sounds gross, but I promise you it's otherworldly.

11.What kind of vehicle do you drive?
A lovely, super fantastical 1996 white Jeep Cherokee. No frills and no cup holders.

We call him Mallow.

12. What are your favorite clothes?
I love to wear over-sized short t-shirts with a tank top or long-sleeved shirt underneath and jeans. I'm pretty simple. Oh, and  a scarf is nice as well.

13. Where would you visit, this weekend, if you had the chance?
Well this weekend is Christmas Eve and Day, so I really wouldn't want to leave because all my family will be in town. But the following weekend is New Year's so I'd like to go to NYC.

14. How many tattoos do you have?
I'm not eighteen yet so I technically can't have any tattoos, not that that stops people if they really want one. I'm not sure if I'll even have one or not. I don't have plans to get any at this point in my life.

15. Where would you want to retire?
Colorado. I love it there.

16. What is your desktop photo?
Pictures like these can be found on my Tumblr, which is listed in the side bar. I suggest you czech it out.

17. Where were you born?
Somewhere in Central Illinois [actual town will remain undisclosed, although it may not be that hard to figure out if you're somewhat familiar with Illinois].

18. What is your favorite sport to watch?
Football. GO PACK GO!

19. How many siblings?
One, my older brother Conor. He's twenty and I'm seventeen.

20. Favorite pastime/hobby?
Reading, Tumblring, Youtubing, hanging out with friends, video gaming, and a lot more fun stuff.

21. Coffee Drinker?
I prefer frappuccino, but if I must I'll drink plain coffee with creamer.

22. Are you a morning person or a night person?
Night, for sure. I have the worst time waking up in the morning. It doesn't even matter if it's six in the morning or eleven. It seems as the day goes on I get more and more awake until I'm bright-eyed at one in the morning. That said, I never have any trouble going to sleep. I can pretty much force myself to fall asleep whenever, even if I'm not tired.

23. Do you have any pets?
Two dogs, Holly and Maggie.
Holly's the beagle, and Maggie's the black dog [half-bloodhound and half-Australian-shepherd].

24. What did you want to be when you were little?
An author. Before that? Bugs Bunny.

25.  What is your favorite color?
Blue.

26. Are you a cat or dog person?
Dog. I like kittens, but I can't really stand grown-up cats.

27. Are you married?
Nope!

28. Always wear your seat belt?
Yes, even if I'm moving my car from the driveway to the street. Safety first, children!

29. Been in a car accident?
Ugh, yes. If you really wanna read about it click here. Pictures are included.

30. Any pet peeves?
Believe it or not, I have many. To save some time I'll just tell you my top two. My first is when I'm eating with someone and I can hear them chewing and/or see their food. It annoys me to no end. My second is when people are late. If you say you are going to be somewhere at a specific time you should be there then. It's so rude to make the other person wait for you. This probably has to do with the fact that I'm early for everything so I have to wait around in the first place.

31. Favorite Pizza Toppings?
Bacon and shrimp. Whenever we go to pizza places that specialize their toppings for you, my dad and I always get this.

32. Favorite Flower?
Roses will always do with me.

33. Favorite ice cream?
I can't remember the brand or even the name of ice cream, but my friends and I always go out and buy this cake and icing ice cream whenever we have girl's night in. It's soooo delicious. It's vanilla ice cream with cake bits and icing.

34. Favorite fast food restaurant?
Taco Bell!

35. From whom did you get your last email?
It was actually a reply from Kathy to one of my comments on her blog.

And for good measure, here's some Leo for ya! [Does anyone get the title reference?]

Change of Plans

You guys, I'm ashamed. I've lied to you all. As it turns out, this year I will not be making any of the pinatas that are in the poll. A couple of my friends decided to team up and make the red bird from Angry Birds. Then I threw out the idea of making a battered up pig from Angry Birds. My friend Brooke loved this idea so I told her I would team up with her and make it. Then we're going to hang them from the Spanish room ceiling so it looks like the bird is attacking the pig. The thing is, it takes a lot of time and work to make a pinata and we only have 10-12 days to make one. It's just a whole lot easier if you pair up with someone. I apologize! From the very bottom of my heart. That is not to say that I will never make any of those pinatas. Pinata making seems to be one of the only art forms I'm actually good at, so I foresee more in the future.

There will be pictures. And there will be awesomeness.

Those darn kids these days just have no respect!

I have found a new hobby.

Step One: Check to see if brother is home.
Step Two: If brother is home, turn radio on to a pop station.
Step Three: Turn radio volume up loud enough for him to hear.
Step Four: Kick back and listen to brother complain about the morals of today's society.

*Note: My brother is only twenty years old. But I secretly believe that he is actually an eighty year old man controlling a twenty year old young man's body.

'Tis all!

Poll Yo!

And now for a short announcement: If you would kindly look to the right of the screen, you will notice I have now added a poll to my blog. Every year my Spanish teacher has all her students make small pinatas. As a Spanish IV student I am able to pick anything I want. I've narrowed it down to three different characters. You can now vote for which one you would like to see me make. Not to sound too braggy, but I consider myself a pretty skilled pinata maker. I've made Mario and the Ferocious Beast. The poll will close on the 13th, because I think that's when we have to tell the teacher what we're making. So get out there and vote people! It's your Constitutional right! [Does that apply here? We'll go with yes.]

Day 21

A picture of something you wish you could forget.
I wish I could forget this dress. I'm not going to lie, I know I look good in it. I mean, that's why I bought it for homecoming. But to be honest it never even really fit right. The whole damn dance I was constantly hitching that thing up so that I wasn't giving any free peep shows. Plus the poofy skirt was not staying poofy. I had to keep having my friend Morgan fluff it up. Which I eventually gave up on. And to top it all off I paid a somewhat ridiculous amount of money for it. Especially considering the fact that I probably won't ever wear it again. I tried to reason with myself saying that the most I've ever spent on a dress is $80 and it was my last high school homecoming. But I regret it. The one thing I do like about the dress? The extra tulle in the skirt provided an adequate barrier between me and a certain someone who I've mentioned previously. I don't want to talk about it. Yet. There will definitely come a time, probably soon, that I want to talk about it. Because it's ridiculous/hilarious/embarrassing. And for some reason I have this insane need to share all ridiculous/hilarious/embarrassing stories I have about myself. Masochist? Yes. Ashamed? A little. Regretful? Never.

Happy 11/11/11! Make your wish count! [If you believe in that stuff.]

Scratch Off Challenge

Lazy blog is lazy. I saw this on Kathy's blog and I just had to steal it. It brought me back to the good ole days of middle school sitting on MySpace filling out bulletin post survey after bulletin post survey. Those were the days. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

You know those give away competitions companies have? The ones where you fill out a card with your information and put it in a box? I never enter them because I always feel like what are my chances anyway. Well the gas station that my family always goes to had a drawing for a Bud Light NFL mini-fridge. And my dad won it! So now that beauty of a mini-fridge is in our Packer corner in our family room. I don't think I've seen my dad that happy in a long time. Well, maybe except for when he got his new job a couple months ago... But still. I'm trying to convince him to let me take it to college next year. No luck yet, but if all else fails I'll just steal it from him.

And the weird thing is that my cousin Jarrod just got one, too. But not from a drawing. I'm not sure where he was but he saw one in a dumpster. It still had energy drinks and beer in it. So he took it home to see if it still worked, and it did! What kind of luck is that? [I figure it belonged to some guy and his girlfriend got tired of seeing it and threw it out.] He's so proud of that thing, he has it displayed front and center in he and his wife's living room.

Take notes people.

How to Procrastinate Like a Pro
by: Kate

The things that I've done instead of writing my persuasive essay for English 101:
  • Play solitaire nonstop. I currently have it minimized on my toolbar. I've played about 15 different times.
  • Facebook creep all of my friends that went to college this year.
  • Tumblr. The greatest time waster ever.
  • Tweet about how my persuasive essay looks a lot like solitaire.
  • Watch the TV show A Haunting. [Word to the wise: if you're looking at a huge house, that's really nice but the price is cheap. It's probably haunted. Or located in the hood.]
  • Go eat Mexican food. I think this one's okay, though, because food is a basic necessity of life.
  • Lounge on the couch whilst watching Final Destination 2 whilst playing with the dogs. [This is hard to do in a reclining position but I've somehow managed it.]
  • Browse YouTube.
  • Google images of George W. Bush.
  • And now, blog.
I like to think of myself as the master of procrastination. I have, however, researched some sources for my essay. And I did get my senior pictures taken today. Now I'm going to goof around a bit more until The Real Housewives of New Jersey starts at 9.

Oh, I just can't wait to be king!

Because being a princess is overrated.

You guys. Lion King 3D is coming to theaters! Usually, I'm all against 3D movies because it seems like that's all there is any more. Plus 3D movies tend to give me a head ache. But Lion King was my all-time favorite movie when I was a little kid. We had it on VCR (so old school, I know) and I watched it so many times the tape literally wore out and doesn't work any more. I don't care if I can't find anyone to go with me. I will willingly be the older creep sitting by herself in the back of the theater.  Now if they only made a Lady and the Tramp 3D my life would be complete. I guess I was more of a talking animals type of girl than princess.

....That's all really. I just wanted to make sure you all were informed. You can thank me now.

Butter cows, horse shows, and hot air balloons.

A couple weekends ago I went to the Illinois State Fair for the first time ever! Needless to say, I was pretty excited. I went with my friend Kayla and her parents. It's basically like every other fair, but bigger. And at the Illinois State Fair they have this thing called the butter cow. You may be saying, "Now, Kate. Every cow is a butter cow." To that I say, but is every butter cow MADE FROM butter?! No, no they are not. Every year a cow is sculpted out of 500 or so pounds of unsalted butter. It takes like a week to sculpt the whole thing, and they reuse the butter 5 times before using new butter.

Said butter cow.
Now if you can't tell, in the bottom right corner there's a little butter piglet. Each year they change the theme of the scene and I believe this year's was a farm scene. I think. I'm not quite sure. But here's a picture of the butter piglet up close.

Kayla and Me
There was a ski lift that went over the whole fair. We decided to go on it at night to see all the lights.
Kayla while we were on the ski lift.
Whenever we got tired of walking around we watched the horse shows. Unfortunately, this was the only animal show left because it was the last weekend of the fair.
Because Kayla's all artsy and whatnot she wanted to go check out the art competition. I was like sure, it's air conditioned right? All kidding aside, some of the art was outstanding. There was this really cool portrait that I wanted to show you guys but one of the judges was sitting right next to it and I don't think you're allowed to take pictures. I wasn't sure and didn't want to get us kicked out.

Then last weekend I went to a hot air balloon festival with my friend Morgan, her sister and brother-in-law, Kayla, and Jordin. It was sooo cool. I think I'd only seen a hot air balloon once in my life. It was too windy for the balloons to go up though. Too bad, because I was totally willing to pay the $250 per person for a ride... Not.
Random watermelon car? BA.
Jordin kindly pointing out the kites.
Kayla and Morgan talking art.

Me and Jordin talking Chelsea Lately.
Morgan decided to pose us with the balloons. They're all on her camera so I'll have to wait until she puts them on Facebook.

We agreed that the Sea Fantasy balloon was obnoxiously over the top. Cool, but way too cocky.
My favorite was the third one down from the Sea Fantasy balloon.

And that's my past two weekends in a nut shell! I actually just got back from boating with Kayla and some of her family. There's nothing better than chilling on the lake, star gazing. While I fully enjoyed myself at both of the fairs, there's something to be said about just taking it easy and relaxing. Sometimes you just have to take time to appreciate the little things in life.

Aaaaaand, cheesy moment's over. Seriously people, the butter cow really is something worth seeing. Simply beautiful. I plan on going next year.
